Governance at Sutherland Shire Council has descended into farce under Mayor Carmelo Pesce who has come out punching after Council decided to defer consideration of his proposed backflip that is not a backflip over Council's policy regarding Deeban Spit, adjoining the Royal National Park at Port Hacking. The Mayor has now resorted to verballing and defaming the Sutherland Shire Environment Centre, individual community members and his own fellow Councillors via social media.

This story highlights the extreme fire danger issues that local residents already know and fear, including those documented in Sutherland Shire Council's submission to the NSW Government over the extreme fire danger posed by the proposed Bundeena Coast Eco Lodge at Spring Gully, which the local and district commands of the RFS sought to be refused but which the RFS planning assessment office approved without having asked for or considered the thousands of public submissions received by Sutherland Shire Council raising issues over non-compliance with fire planning policy.
Just last week we learnt of a threat of the withdrawal of RFS resources to the protection of properties in Bundeena and Maianbar at the edge of the Royal National Park.
In the opinion of this author, our local politicians are too focused on greenie bashing and too little focused on protecting the environment, life and particularly the world heritage values of the Royal National Park, Australia's first national park.

Mayor Carmelo Pesce is once again showing his disregard for the environment, science and DUE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS by abusing his office and the purpose of Mayoral Minutes. Tonight he will attempt to use a mayoral minute to inappropriately rescind Council's recent endorsement of the inclusion of Deeban Spit into the proposed Sydney Marine Park upending the due process that Council staff have take sensibly taken in drafting Council's support for a marine park based on environmental science and sound public interest considerations.
Once again Mayor Pesce has demonstrated his willingness to abuse his office and the due procedures of Council to the detriment of the environment against the public interest.
Mayor Pesce has decided to once again abuse the role of the Mayoral Minute by calling an Extraordinary Council Meeting tonight to pass one tonight.The role of a Mayoral Minute is traditionally to record a matter of news of local significance; for example, the recent Mayoral Minute recognising the role of the firies in fighting the fires in the Royal National Park last year. Their purpose is not to be used to bypass the correct procedures of Council or to overturn previous resolutions of Council.
The NSW Government had to step in and convene an independent enquiry into Sutherland Shire Council when Mayor Pesce's predecessor, fellow Liberal Kent Johns (formerly member of the Labor Party) was found to have abused the purpose of Mayoral Minutes by inappropriately using one in a similar manner to what Mayor Pesce will attempt to do tonight.
The Mayor's knee jerk reaction in opposition to Council's endorsed support of sound environmental management of Deeban Spit and the Hacking Estuary is, bluntly, stupid. It is only through careful environmental management that natural areas such as Deeban Spit can continue to be enjoyed responsibly and sustainably by recreational users while sustainably maintaining their vital ecological role.
Deeban spit is home to endangered species such as the pied oyster catcher which migrate from Siberia annually to nest and breed on the spit.

Happy Anniversary! Three years ago on this day, development applications for a recreation facility for the former Scout land and clearing of the adjoining unmade road reserve were lodged with Sutherland Shire Council. Council refused both development applications and the developer's appeals have been before the Land and Environment Court for the last two and a half years! The good news? The trees are still there! On this day thirty-seven years ago, five volunteers from Headquarters (Heathcote) Brigade tragically lost their lives as a result of a bush fire in the Royal National Park.
It was Monday 3rd November 1980, just before dawn when local fire fighters were alerted to a bush fire near McKell Avenue, Waterfall.
Later in the afternoon, the fire crossed Uloola Track heading north towards Heathcote.
It is on this track where the five firefighters tragically lost their lives when the fire passed through the area.
The fire was contained four days later near Karloo Pools just south of Heathcote.
Today marks the important anniversary when these five brave firefighters from Headquarters (Heathcote) Brigade, Steve Crunkhorn, 26yo, Gregory Rolfe, 24yo, Vernon Stedman, 21, David Marshall, 19, and William Cummings, 21 made the ultimate sacrifice protecting the Sutherland Shire.
We remember these young firefighters. Our thoughts are very much with their families, friends and fellow firefighters, many who still remain active today.

The male powerful owl is out hunting. He is calling from a tree right within the development envelope on the former Scout land. Hopefully there are young mouths to feed again this year. It's a quite depressing sound when you know that many hundreds of trees are about to be cleared from that happy hunting habitat - prime sugar glider and ring tail possum territory. For what?
